The Story of the Water TowerSouth Salt Lake Water Tower Newspaper Clipping from August 25, 1949
Building Contractors Push South S. L. Water Tower First sections of cylinder-type tank to rest atop the South Salt Lake water tower were in place Wednesday, forming metal plate ring to which tank will be added. Completion is set for Sept. 15. SOUTH SALT LAKE, Aug. 24— "The vital part of the 156-ft. steel structure decorating the landscape at 2510 S. West Temple—300,000 gallon 'water tank—began shaping up Wednesday. Six steel columns and a central pipeline have been jockeyed into place, welded, bolted and soon will be topped off with a cylinder-type tank. The first circle of steel prefabricated sections of the tank were hoisted and secured Wednesday. The contractors, Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. engineers, said the job should be completed by Sept. 15. Then follows a "test-fill" to make certain the tank is watertight. If all is in order the next step will be to paint the structure inside and out. The inside will get a coat of water-repellent paint and the outside is to be covered with silver aluminum paint. The most impressive part of the town's new water system also is the least expensive; said William T. South, town manager. He pointed out the structure is being built at a cost of about $53,000. "Most of our money has gone 'underground'," he said. The underground system consists of some 26 miles of pipe with about 700 connections. The system "will serve nearly 7000 residents of the community with a pressure on the west side of an estimated 75 Ibs. and on the east side of State street of 60 lbs. Plans are to celebrate completion of the system shortly after the water tower is completed. A switch-throwing ceremony is to open a three-day carnival to be held on a site adjacent to the tower. No date has been set. Because the tower stretches 6 ft. above the height set by the Civil Aeronautics Administration for structure, for which it must have warning lights, additional electrical work may delay the tower's completion." --Article contributed by the Bentley Family |
